I am LaToyia Watts Jackson and I teach Language Arts at Westover High School. I am one of twelve academic teachers in the Ninth Grade Academy. The ninth grade students are isolated from the upperclassmen. Westover High School is one of four high schools in Dougherty County, Albany, Georgia. We serve a total of 1,379 students: 456 freshmen, 316 sophomores, 301 juniors, and 306 seniors. Of these students, 46% are economically disadvantaged and 8% have a disability. The graduation rate is 70.7%. Finally, Westover High School only met seven of the nine indicators, which resulted in not making adequate yearly progress (AYP). However, this school is not on the Needs Improvement list. Therefore, 113 students transferred to this school for the 2008-2009 school term; because it is the â€Å"School of Choice.† Dougherty County School System requires students to read twenty-five books per year (this includes short stories, articles, novels, and other works of literature). However, many novels are complex and are difficult for special needs students to read. There is a lack of resources to assist special need students in a literature classroom. Such resources include but are not limited to: audio books, books in Braille, large-print books, technology, and other supplementary materials to meet the various needs of special needs students. Arabic Culture Culture is a very significant attribute of human experience determining to a large extend the way people relate with others within their environment. According to Mahfouz (2011), culture is also important not just for managing the way understand and relate with each other but also as a form of identification giving people a sense of belonging and identity. The human race is highly cultured with many different people preferring to lead their lives based on traditions defined within their cultures and in order to understand human behavior and relationship, it is important to ensure that this issue is well understood and appreciated. One of the most popular formats for literature is a hero faced with seemingly insurmountable struggles who is able to overcome these obstacles and live ‘happily ever after’. Chipotle Mexican Grill is a pioneer in the fast-casual restaurant industry. It was founded in 1993 by Steve Ells. Since then, it has grown to be among the leaders of the restaurant industry (Gold, 2005). Currently, the company has more 1600 restaurants within the US and 11 internationally. In 2000, under the leadership of Steve Ells, Chipotle made a commitment to serving customers with food sourced, produced and served through sustainable and responsible approaches (Gold, 2005). However, because of lack of effective strategy, took too long to fulfill this promise to customers. For example, in 2015, the restaurant recorded a loss because consumers questioned the quality of the food and cleanliness of in-store practices (Gold, 2005). This called for the need for Chipotle to implement integrated resource management techniques. Doing this enhanced customer loyalty, employees morale, increased competitive advantage and profits, and attracted big investors. Chipotle chose this method because it was cheaper compared the cost of buying ingredients from farmers. Also, it made management and control of the business easier. To make Hyper-Local restaurant more effective, the business used Integrated Plant Nutrition Systems approach in applying this technique (Gold, 2005). Apart from being economically viable and environmentally sound, this process was also conducive to the urgently needed increase in production of healthy food (Mason, 2013)s. The method is used to identify all types of waste in the value stream chain and methods of eliminating them (Shorr, 2014). In case of a machine breakdown, the use of a dynamic scheduling technique such as right-shift heuristics allowed farming processes to continue by simply altering the production schedule (Toyota Motor Corporation, 2016). Similarly, to reduce risks associated with labor size, the business contracted farm training operators to equip laborers with multi-tasking skills. This way, the process of ingredient sourcing would not be interrupted incase a laborer fell ill (Gold, 2005). Multi-skilled employees trained to do tasks on machinery at different levels of manufacturing caused an increase in employee labor rates because vary of years of service, contract negotiations and positional status (Mazutis, 2012). Consequently, the value of optimal assignment was affected. Nevertheless, this technique yielded fruits for Chipotle. For example by 2010, 100% of pork, chicken and beef served in the restaurants were naturally raised. Also, beans served to the customers were organically grown. By 2014, the company gained recognition for serving customers food made by ingredients sourced through responsible and sustainable means (Gold, 2005). This is also the moment when Chipotle customer loyalty came to test. Because of the increase in food production cost, the company had to increase its food prices. Surprisingly, having seen the results of sustainable and responsible sourcing, Chipotle customers embraced the change. Consequently, the company made profits; despite increasing prices. Strategy formation in organizations needs concerted efforts. More importantly, it needs careful implementation. Failing to do this can be a great setback. Chipotle knew that their mission is to change ways in which people think and eat fast food (Gold, 2005). Therefore, they sought ways of ensuring customers are served fresh food made from ingredients sourced through sustainable and responsible ways (Gold, 2005). For example, they started serving naturally raised pork, beef, and chicken and organically grown black beans. Because of the nature of the strategy, they had to increase food prices by one dollar. Because of the nature of the technique, the company had to increase its food prices by $1. Critique Implementation of vertical integration strategy is not for the faint hearted. It takes long and require close monitor to establish progress. Moreover, it has tendencies of being expensive, especially for an organization that has not dealt with it before (Dickey, 2017). Chipotle majored in preparing and serving customers with meals. In terms of sourcing, the company sought suppliers. However, after realizing that 50% of the food they served was being sourced through unsustainable and irresponsible means, they decided to create a backyard farm in most of its restaurant to help in production of ingredients (Gold, 2005). Of course this came with cost. For example, the company had to purchase farming machineries and seek the services of suppliers for seeds and fertilizers. Additionally, they had to the cost of construction and training laborers on responsible and sustainable processes of farming. At the beginning, Chipotle experienced a decrease in profits. After conducting an assessment of cost, Chipotle management realized that they had spent $ 2 million in production (Gold, 2005). This led to a consequent decrease in profits. This was shocking. Although they had seen strong evidence that consumers wanted food prepared by ingredients sourced through sustainable and responsible means, there was no reflection in sales (Gilmour, 2013). This shows the importance of conducting a thorough market research to understand the target market of a strategy. It enables a business to better understand the attitude and values among both loyal and potential customers (Grant, 2016). Strategies that lead to increase in cost are often avoided by companies that fear losing customers. Recommendations The performance of a business depends on stability in its supply chain. This is possible through balance and collaboration in supply, management and delivery. A motivated employee is the best for persuading customers to continue being part of a brand. For example, when Chipotle decided to serve naturally raised chicken, beef, pork and organically grown black beans, there may have been resistance within some section of the staff (Gold, 2005). However, through open communication, inclusion and responsible management, they chose to embrace it and be part of its implementation (Grant, 2016). Similarly, organizations should include employees in strategy formation and implementations to enable effective and efficient results (DoorDash, 2017). Pangea Essay The Shifting of PangeaHave you ever noticed that a map of the world looks like a puzzle and the continents look like the pieces that would fit together to complete the puzzle. In 1912, Alfred Wegener, a German scientist and an adventurer, came up with a theory that the continents had once been part of a supercontinent. Wegener proposed that, over 200 million years, what he called Pangea had separated and became individual pieces. Pangea means all lands in Greek, and that is what Pangea was, a very large landmass when all of the continents were connected. When Wegener first proposed this idea in 1912, people did not buy into this theory. One of the problems that Wegener faced was that he believed that the continents had drifted apart, but he couldnt explain how they had drifted apart. Another problem was that there was a theory already in place called the Contraction Theory. This theory stated that the Earth was once a molten ball and in the process of cooling, the surface cracked and folded up on itself. One of the problems with this theory was that it suggests that all mountain ranges were the same age, and this could not be true. Wegners explanation was that continents shifted and these shifting plates would collide, encounter resistance from one another, compress, then fold upwards to form mountains near the edges of the plates. Eons ago India and an ancient ocean called the Tethys Ocean sat on a tectonic plate. This place was shifting northward towards Asia at a rate of 10 centimeters per year. The ocean got progressively smaller unit about 55 million years ago when it collided with Asia. There was no more ocean left of lubricate the subduction and so the plates formed the High Plateau of Tibet and the Himalayan Mountains. Evidence that Pangea may have existed can be found in land animals, vegetation, mountains, and the climate. Fossils and plants that are the same, can be found on different continents, across oceans. Assuming that the land was once connect ed, animals could have walked across the large land mass and not have to swim. For example, the mesosauras (a land animal) could not have traveled from South America to Africa because of the Atlantic Ocean. Yet, there are fossils of this animal on both continents. Another example is there are trees in South America, Africa, India, Australia, and Antarctica that are of the same origin. How would the seeds have traveled over so many different continents? One explanation is that the lands were once connected. Other evidence is the formation of mountains. The Appalachian Mountains are found in North America as well as the British Isle and Scandinavia, which is now separated by the Atlantic Ocean. The mountains are of the same age and structure. More evidence why scientists believe in the Pangea hypothesis is the climate. Since the Southern Hemisphere was once by Antarctica and the Northern Hemisphere was once by the equator, the climates were different than those we know today. There is evidence that ice sheets once existed in the Northern Hemisphere. The temperature of the earth hasnt changed much, but the location of the continents have. The earths core is made up of nickel and iron ball encompassed by an outer shell of molten metal. After that is a space of rock call the mantle. In the first part of the earths existence, an outer layer of hot rock cooled to make the earths surface, or the lithosphere. The top layer, which is the most brittle, of the lithosphere is called the crust. Over millions of years the earths crust has cracked making huge stone slabs called plates. There are seven large and dozen smaller plates. The plates seem to float on the mantle and move around when the plates around them cool and move. The places where these plates come in contact with one another are called faults, or fault lines. At these places of impact, there is much seismic and volcanic activity. At the location were plates collide against each other the plates can at in three different ways: they can push against each other and form mountains; they can slide past each other sometimes starting earthquakes; or one can dive beneath the other, when this happens the descending plate can melt and rise up and form a volcano. The plates are still moving, and the Atlantic Ocean will be much larger in 50 million years and the Pacific Ocean will be smaller. North and South America will have moved farther west, while Greenland will have moved farther northwest, the western part of Africa will rotate clockwise and run into Europe.
